PrEP · daily HIV prevention, assessed with a men’s-health doctor

Lower your HIV risk with PrEP, once the right checks say it suits you.

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a daily pill that lowers your risk of getting HIV. Whether it fits your life is a real decision, not a hard sell. Dr Muhammad Taufiq Rashid starts with the right checks and an honest look at your situation, so the choice you make is an informed one.

What PrEP actually is

A preventive pill, taken daily, that lowers HIV risk.

PrEP is a medicine taken before a possible exposure to HIV, so your body is better prepared to stop the virus from taking hold. Taken as prescribed, it lowers the risk of getting HIV through sex. It is prevention, not a treatment for existing infection, which is why we confirm you are HIV negative first.

PrEP does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections, and it is not a substitute for condoms where those matter to you. Whether it suits you depends on your kidneys, your status, and your real level of risk. That is exactly what the consultation works out.

The checks before PrEP

What we look at first, in plain words.

HIV status
A rapid HIV test confirms you are HIV negative first. PrEP is prevention, so this is the starting point, not a formality.
Kidney function
A blood test checks your kidneys (creatinine and eGFR), because PrEP is processed through them. We keep monitoring this while you are on it.
Hepatitis B
We check hepatitis B status, so the plan accounts for it if needed.
Full STI screen
Because PrEP does not block other STIs, a full screen is done at the same visit. One set of tests, two purposes.
Honest picture

What PrEP does, and what it doesn’t.

What you might assume The honest version
PrEP blocks every STI It lowers HIV risk only. Other STIs need their own screening.
One pill suits everyone Suitability depends on your kidneys, status and life; we confirm first.
Take it and forget testing Regular HIV and kidney checks continue while you are on it.
It is a lifelong commitment You can stop when your situation changes. It is your call.

Common questions

Before you reach out.

How well does PrEP lower HIV risk?

Taken as prescribed, PrEP substantially lowers the risk of getting HIV through sex. How much it lowers your personal risk depends on taking it consistently. We talk through the real numbers at your visit, honestly.

Is PrEP for me?

PrEP is worth considering if your HIV risk is real, for example a partner living with HIV, multiple partners, or not always using condoms. Suitability also depends on your kidneys and status. The consultation is where we work that out with you.

How often do I need to test?

While on PrEP, HIV and kidney checks continue at regular intervals (usually every few months). We set the schedule with you so it fits your life.

Does PrEP protect against other STIs?

No. PrEP lowers HIV risk only. That is why we do a full STI screen at the same visit, and keep screening while you are on it.

Can I stop if I want to?

Yes. PrEP is not a lifelong commitment. If your situation changes, we talk about stopping safely and what comes next.

How do I find out the cost?

The Fees section lists the consultation and checks. If a medicine is considered, we discuss that cost with you first, in private.
